A blank canvas for MC Championship: fans speculate on Season 5

Taura Kay , Wraithzeon 27 March, 2025 3 minutes read

Minecraft Championship (MCC) is poised to splash back onto our screens with the dawn of Season 5. Noxcrew, the masterminds behind the most well-known and widely beloved tournament in the current Minecraft community, have officially announced its return.

“We’re painting the town red! And blue and green and all the colours of the world!” Noctis_Mori, Noxcrew’s Community Manager, wrote in a Discord announcement.

The inaugural event of this highly anticipated season has been titled MCC: Blank Canvas. It’s unclear as yet what this means, but there’s been plenty of speculation around the MCC community. Will it signify a fresh start for the event, or perhaps a creative twist on familiar game modes?

“Blank Canvas is so so interesting of a name,” says TheCeriseHood, “because it means literally everything could be different.”

“It’s an event similar to Rising, with only newcomers,” SuitFella guesses, “indicating the ‘Blank Canvas’ aspect of this.”

Other community members think ‘Blank Canvas’ could refer to a new minigame being introduced.  Some people drew links to the Grid Runners game from the two-week public Bedrock event in summer 2024, speculating on a new game being similar, while others suggested it being a building game or update of Build Mart.

Big Sales At Build Mart: a building game where teams must race to collect materials and complete as many builds as possible.

“Truth be told, I think it would be awesome if they did a new game related to paint in some way,” says Monarch_47. “I could just be a Splatoon fanatic, but I would love to see what Noxcrew’s idea of Turf Wars could be.”

Another theory is that the opening event of Season 5 will have a painting theme across all games and set designs, potentially including some new maps for the longer-term, rather than an entirely new minigame.

Meanwhile, other community members have been joking about the idea of ‘Blank Canvas’ meaning an unfinished event. “It’s MCC, but the contestants spend three hours making a game,” says eyadGamingExtreme. “It’s basically just a game dev livestream with forty people.”

It’s not just the gameplay and theming of Blank Canvas itself that have been hot topics for debate. MC Championship frequently adds new players to its roster, so the community has been sharing their hopes for new cast members for Season 5.

“I really want to see Pangi, whether it’s in the main roster or just in a Twitch Rivals,” ParrotBT says – a notion mirrored by Svenhond. “I just want a Roscumber, Pangi and Aimsey team, to fit in with The Realm,” Sven says, referencing a content creator SMP run by MCC regular Tubbo.  Aimsey is already an MCC regular, but Roscumber and Pangi would both be new and popular additions to the cast of players.

There’s still a few weeks to go until the event, which is set for 3rd May at 8pm BST – giving fans plenty of time to come up with new theories on what ‘Blank Canvas’ could mean, and who could be accepted into MCC’s roster, before Noxcrew unveils the full details. For now, one thing’s for sure: fans are eagerly awaiting the first brushstroke.
