Cubed! is an annual in-game Minecraft convention for both Java and Bedrock editions. This year it will run from Friday 4th to Sunday 6th October, and is open for anyone to attend, with free tickets available on the Cubed! website. The convention raises money for Special Effect – a UK charity that helps those with physical disabilities to be able to play video games – as well as One Tree Planted, a non-profit organisation which focuses on global reforestation.
Like previous years, the convention will feature a range of minigames to play, booths to explore, and livestreamed panels and shows to watch.
“Cubed! is a very unique thing, there’s nothing else like it,” says Dwittyy from RASA Studios, which will be hosting the Noxsquad Gameshow at Cubed! this year. “There’s no other in-game Minecraft convention.”
“I think it’s a great chance for people to show not only their projects but themselves, and the way everything is structured really makes for an intuitive and very fun experience,” adds AlesandroDeMoor, from the Appleseed Boat Gang (a.k.a. ABG). “The staff team is also a super healthy and honestly refreshing group of people that genuinely care about the project, and you can see how excited they are to showcase stuff every year.”
Every year there are a range of minigames and activities to play – and this year is no different. RASA will be hosting their minigame Flick Flack, whilst the ABG is hosting an ice boat racing track, where anyone can join races and attempt to beat their personal best. There are likely to be other games and activities, although these have not yet been announced.
There will be a range of live panels and shows broadcast on the CubedCon Twitch channel alongside booth showcases, playing games, and Cubed! news updates. One particular show to look forward to is the Noxsquad Gameshow, where two teams go head to head in various arcade-style minigames.
There’ll also be the Cubed! Grand Prix, hosted by the ABG. This is a livestreamed competition featuring two rounds: one with seasoned “pro” boat racers, and one with invited guests.
One highlight of the convention each year is exploring all the different booths. This year booth applications were opened in late July, with anyone able to submit a booth to promote their Minecraft maps, events, servers, channels or other projects. The best of these booths have been added to this year’s convention hall, and it’s always really interesting to see what the Minecraft community is up to.
“I love going around and seeing the different booths that people make,” Dwittyy tells me. “I like seeing all the different mapmaking teams and SMPs and communities. My favourite from previous years that I always look for is an escape room booth – you’d go in and have to figure out how to get through to the next room, which would involve something sneaky.”
Whilst some booth hosts have already announced their involvement at Cubed! on social media, there isn’t an official list – so certainly worth checking them out on the server to find some new projects to follow.
Tickets for the convention are available now from the Cubed! website, with both free tickets and paid VIP tickets available. Perhaps we’ll even see you there?
