After a year and a half off player and viewer screens, Ice Boat Racing Invitational (IBRI) is back – and the organisers have been hard at work to improve player experience and bring exciting new content creation opportunities.
In previous editions of IBRI, the event consisted of one long race, with players required to complete a certain number of “pit stop” minigames. Now, players will be racing four times, with shorter races and no pit stops. “It all comes down to player experience, which will directly translate to viewer experience,” event organiser NewKiddo tells us. “This means more action, more intensity, more comeback opportunities and spotlight moments for each creator, which is where the new format comes to shine.”

Before the first race there will be a qualification match, in which players have three laps to set their best time without resetting. This will determine the starting positions for the first race.
However, for the second race, the grid will be reversed – with winners of the first race starting last in the second race, allowing for underdogs to rise up the ranks. “Everyone gets their moment,” NewKiddo says. “If you played well in the first race, you start last in the next one. Fighting your way back to the lead, while overtaking dozens of players, can make for the most exciting race POV.”
Of course, it’s not just the highly skilled players that this change affects, because this also helps those who struggle in the first race. “In the old format, after a few laps, you can stop taking the race seriously, as there’s no chance for you to win,” NewKiddo explains. “Now compare it to the new format, where you’re literally starting in the front.”

The grids will continue to be reversed for the third and fourth races. “We can’t give each player the win,” NewKiddo says, “but we must give each player the chance, and that is what we hope to achieve with this format.”
Every race will take place on a unique map designed specifically for the event. “The maps are extremely engaging, from decorations to the gimmicks, skip routes, and secret wall taps,” NewKiddo tells us. “We put extra effort to find the perfect balance between keeping the map simple enough for new players, while giving more experienced drivers a chance for an overtake, whether it’s a skip, risky wall tap or a split route.”
“There are many risks to be considered on each map,” he continues. “Every driver will have to make a dozen quiet decisions, to take a chance or to play it safe. That rush, that adrenaline, knowing that a single decision can decide the fate of the race is the true spirit of ice boat racing, that we’re very happy to share with our players.”

The overall winner of the event will be decided based on points from across all four races, with both team and individual leaderboards, alongside a separate podium for the top new players.
“Of course, for many players this event is about having fun and hanging out with your friends while screaming at slower drivers,” NewKiddo says. “For those players, this is an event like no other, and we’re welcoming them with open arms.”
“But for those seeking competition, we made a big effort to reward players more in general, as well as reward first time players for doing well. With the introduction of the Rookie Podium, becoming the best new player is something players can compete for, without comparing themselves to extremely experienced drivers.”

Returning from a long hiatus with a brand new format and assortment of new features makes this an exciting time for the event’s staff team. “We just can’t wait to see how creators will react,” NewKiddo tells us. “Their reaction, their feedback and experience is why we keep pushing this event to be the best there is. That being said, this time around no one has the slightest idea who’s gonna win. The skill level is rising almost as fast as players’ ambitions. There’ll be a lot of drama, heartbreak, chaos and rivalry leading up to the winning overtake, that I simply cannot wait to see.”
“Ice Boat Racing as a whole is a very new niche in competitive Minecraft. It’s growing rapidly and we hope that IBRI can introduce more passionate players to the community. Drifting on ice is a phenomenal skill that can be learned by anyone – like parkour or building. In the true spirit of Minecraft, the skill ceiling is only limited by the imagination of our builders and players. We hope that in the future, more events will include Ice Boat Racing as a skill that never fails to impress.”

While IBRI has spent a long time off-screen – the most recent event being a Christmas charity event in December 2024 – it is now returning to a regular schedule. “AlesandroDeMoor, the creator of IBRI, wanted it to inspire new generations of ice boat racers,” NewKiddo explains, “which can only be done through hard work, perfectionism, and consistency, which we hope to achieve together in the upcoming years.”
Ice Boat Racing Invitational #4 will take place on Sunday 26th July at 8pm BST / 3pm EDT. You can stay up to date with the latest IBRI news at @IBRInvitational on Twitter/X.
